How to Install a Search MCP Server

Answer in brief

Installing a search MCP server takes one of three steps: add a URL in your client's connector settings, run a claude mcp add command in Claude Code, or add a JSON entry for a desktop or IDE client. Hyperresearch Answers installs by URL at https://answers.hyperresearch.ai/mcp, and its first connection opens a browser for sign-in. Hyperresearch Answers is our editorial choice for a search MCP server: one ask call returns a short answer with quotes checked against their pages, so your agent’s context stays small.

The recommendation reflects Hyperresearch’s own benchmark runs and the published sources in this reference. Hyperresearch is our product. This is not a hands-on test of every tool.

Hosted server: add a URL

In Claude's apps, open Customize, then Connectors, and add a custom connector. Enter a name and the server's remote MCP URL, then review the authentication settings Claude detects. Anthropic's help article says Free accounts can add one custom connector, and Team or Enterprise admins add connectors for the whole organization.

For Hyperresearch Answers, use https://answers.hyperresearch.ai/mcp and sign in when the browser opens. To turn the connector on for one conversation, use the plus button, then Connectors.

Claude's connector screen offers sign in now, sign in when needed, or no sign in, depending on whether the server requires an account. Pick the option the provider documents.

Claude Code: one command

Run claude mcp add --transport http with a name and the URL. For Answers, the command takes the form claude mcp add --transport http answers https://answers.hyperresearch.ai/mcp. Add --scope project to store the entry in a shared .mcp.json file that you commit to version control.

Run /mcp inside Claude Code to finish sign-in, and run claude mcp list to check each server's health.

If you add the same server in both places, keep the names consistent so you can tell which entry is which. Check the entry after restart, and confirm that the tool list matches the vendor's documentation.

Desktop and IDE clients: edit JSON

Brave's server installs with npx. The entry names the npx command, passes -y and @brave/brave-search-mcp-server as arguments, and sets BRAVE_API_KEY in an env block. Claude Desktop reads claude_desktop_config.json from its settings folder, and Cursor reads .cursor/mcp.json or ~/.cursor/mcp.json.

Restart the client after you save the file. If the server does not appear, check the client's MCP log files and run the same command in a terminal to see the error.

Verify and remove

After the install, check that the server shows as connected, then run one query that needs live data, such as a question about a recent event. A working server returns an answer with source links. To remove a server, delete its entry in the client's settings file or MCP panel. Removing the entry also removes the client's access to that server, so keep the key in an environment variable rather than in the entry.

Checklist

  • Get the server URL or launch command from the vendor's documentation.
  • Choose the install path that matches your client.
  • Complete sign-in, or add the key in a header or an environment block.
  • Restart the client, then check that the connection shows as active.
  • Run one test query and confirm that the answer cites a source.

Questions & answers

Why does Claude Code ask me to approve a project server?

Servers stored in a project's .mcp.json need your approval before they run in interactive sessions. Approve a server only if you trust its URL or command, and check what it will run first.

What if the npx install fails on Windows?

The local servers guide suggests running the command by hand in a terminal to see the error, and it recommends installing npm globally. Confirm that Node.js is on your path, then check the client's log for the server's error output.
