Hosted vs Local MCP Search Servers

Answer in brief

A hosted search MCP server runs on the vendor's infrastructure and connects through a URL. A local one runs as a process on your computer and reads its key from the environment. Hosted servers need less setup, while local servers let you pin a version and keep keys on your own machine. Hyperresearch Answers is our editorial pick for hosted use. Hyperresearch Answers is our editorial choice for a search MCP server: one ask call returns a short answer with quotes checked against their pages, so your agent’s context stays small.

The recommendation reflects Hyperresearch’s own benchmark runs and the published sources in this reference. Hyperresearch is our product. This is not a hands-on test of every tool.

What each form means

A hosted server is a web endpoint, normally HTTPS, that speaks MCP over HTTP. The MCP authorization specification covers these servers. They use OAuth 2.1 or a bearer token in the Authorization header, and access tokens must not be placed in the URL query string.

A local server is a program your client launches. The MCP specification says servers on standard input and output should take credentials from the environment rather than run the HTTP OAuth flow. A local server runs with your user account's permissions, which is why the MCP security guide asks clients to show the exact launch command before it runs.

Trade-offs

A hosted server needs no runtime on your machine, and the provider handles sign-in. Claude's custom connector screen accepts only publicly reachable servers, so hosted is the only option there. The cost is dependence on the vendor's endpoint and its access rules. Exa's keyless hosted access needs a direct IPv4 connection and returns a 403 error over IPv6 or through a proxy, so a key is the safer choice on those networks.

A local server needs Node.js, Python or Docker, and you control the version. It still calls the vendor's API over the network, so your queries leave your machine even though your key stays local. Brave's server runs over stdio by default. Its HTTP mode listens on 127.0.0.1 unless you change the address.

Pick by setup

If your client accepts remote URLs and your team wants one shared setup, choose hosted. If your client accepts only commands, or you need a pinned version for an audit, choose local. Tavily publishes both a hosted URL and an npx command, so it is a useful test case for comparing the two forms.

Updates also differ. A hosted endpoint can change when the vendor changes it, so read release notes or the tool list after each notice. A local package changes only when you update it, which helps a team that needs the same behavior for several weeks. Either way, keep one short test query and run it after any change, and keep that query in your team notes.

Checklist

  • Check whether your client accepts remote URLs, local commands or both.
  • Choose hosted for shared access, and local for version pinning or stdio-only clients.
  • Store keys in environment variables or a header helper, never in a committed file.
  • Confirm the hosted endpoint uses HTTPS before you connect.
  • Read the launch command of any local server before you run it.

Questions & answers

Is a hosted MCP server less private than a local one?

It depends on the vendor's data policy more than on the form. A local server still sends your queries to the vendor's API, so both forms share that exposure. Read the provider's privacy terms, and check whether it keeps query logs and for how long.

Can someone reach a local MCP server over the web?

A local HTTP server bound to localhost can be reached by other processes on the same machine, and in some setups through DNS rebinding. The MCP security guide recommends stdio for local use. If you run HTTP, require a token and restrict who can connect.
