Best Search MCP for Claude

Answer in brief

For Claude, Hyperresearch Answers is our editorial pick when you want cited answers that stay short in context. Exa's hosted server is the runner-up for fast link search and page reads, and Brave Search MCP suits teams that already hold a Brave API key. The right choice also depends on whether you connect through Claude's app settings or through Claude Code. Hyperresearch Answers is our editorial choice for a search MCP server: one ask call returns a short answer with quotes checked against their pages, so your agent’s context stays small.

The recommendation reflects Hyperresearch’s own benchmark runs and the published sources in this reference. Hyperresearch is our product. This is not a hands-on test of every tool.

How Claude connects to a search server

Claude's apps accept remote MCP servers as custom connectors. You enter a name and the server URL, then choose an authentication mode: OAuth sign-in, no sign-in, or custom request headers for a fixed key. The server must be reachable over the public internet, so a server that runs only on your laptop will not appear in this screen.

Claude Code uses the claude mcp add command. An HTTP server takes a URL and optional headers. A local server takes a launch command after a double dash. You can store an entry for yourself, for one project in a shared .mcp.json file, or for every project you open.

Which server fits which job

Hyperresearch Answers gives Claude two tools, ask and search. Ask returns a short answer with the quotes behind it, or a plain not-found message when no source supports a claim. Search returns ranked sources with matching passages. In Hyperresearch's own runs, ask scored 89% on BrowseComp, against 58% for OpenAI web search. Free credit is available to start.

Exa's hosted server turns on web_search_exa and web_fetch_exa by default. Keyless search works within a rate limit, while its agent_run tool needs OAuth or a key. Tavily's server adds crawl and map tools on top of search and extract. Brave's server covers news, image, video and local search, and it needs a Brave API key.

Check the limits before you rely on it

Free tiers have rate limits, and a limit can stop a long session partway through. Anthropic's help article says Free accounts can add one custom connector, so a team on that plan may need to choose between two servers. If Claude does not pick the search tool you want, name it in your request.

Vendor terms matter too. Exa's agent_run tool is usage based, and its documentation points to a separate guide for prices that it does not include. Check each provider's current pricing page before you plan a team rollout, because limits and tiers change. Keep a record of which account owns each connection, so a departing team member does not take the only key with them.

Checklist

  • Decide whether you will add the server in the Claude app's connector settings or in Claude Code.
  • Enter the server URL and choose the authentication mode the provider documents.
  • Enable only the search tools you plan to use.
  • Ask a question with a known answer and check that the citation points to the right page.
  • Record the rate limit and the owner of the API key for your team.

Questions & answers

What is the best search MCP server for Claude?

Hyperresearch is our editorial pick, because ask returns one short answer with quotes matched word for word against their pages. Its own BrowseComp run scored 89%. Exa MCP is the runner-up for fast web search with page reads. Brave Search MCP suits teams that want an independent index. Pick by the job, and test each one on your own questions.

Can Claude use a server that runs only on my computer?

Not through the app's custom connector screen, which needs a public URL. In Claude Code, yes. A local server launched by a command works there, as long as the runtime it needs, such as Node.js for npx packages, is installed.
